When your dryer is not spinning it can be very frustrating. Especially when you have a load of laundry waiting to be finished. It may seem like there is a huge problem with your appliance, but luckily most problems can be solved at home with some basic troubleshooting steps before calling a professional.

The most common cause of your dryer not spinning is a broken drive belt. The belt fits around the drum and works like a pulley to make it spin during the cycle. It wears down over time and needs to be replaced. Replacing a belt requires disassembly of the drum and dryer to get at it.

Another possible reason your dryer is not spinning is worn or damaged drum rollers or glides. These are the small wheels that support the back of the dryer drum and roll along the drum bearings to allow it to rotate. If these are wearing out you can hear them squeaking or feel resistance as the drum turns. This can put a lot of strain on the motor and lead to a breakdown or a dryer that won’t spin.

You should always unplug any electrical appliances before working on them. Once it is unplugged you can then check the door switch to see if it is ok. There is a plastic peg inside the dryer that engages the switch to start the dryer. If it is broken, the switch will not click and will need to be replaced. dryer is not spinning
